Birdsong - Chapter Four
Two weeks I've been sleepless.
Insomnia has eroded our world to a wasteland, and withered your love for me.
You turn away from my imploring gaze, heart fallen into atrophy, your body cold and not responding.
I am so afraid. Terror coils in my belly like a snake with scales brighter than anything in this barren place. Tightly, tightly winding as I tentatively reach out my hand, and I swallow it down, for fear that it might kill us both.
My fingers land upon your cheek like shy moths on a windowpane housing a most beautiful flame.
Your skin recoils from my touch and the world shudders with me as I awaken.
It is 00:00 am by our bedroom clock; it's been broken for longer than we know because we cannot keep track of the time, and time slips so easily on it's own.
You, you who are not him, with your soulful eyes filled with concern to the brim, are standing over me.
I cry, guilt-ridden, and I let you hold me and I do not turn away.
Hours go by with your arms around my waist, protecting me from you-know-not-what, and content in the closeness.
I feel the atrophy heal, and the apathy dissolve.
My heart renews with love again.
Unsure if I'm awake, you whisper very softly, "Those birds look as happy as we are, nestled up close. Tomorrow, they will sing just for us."

I watch the birds on the branch outside my window,
and I smile.
No longer do I fear the birdsong, for they shall not wake me from illusionary love. They shall wake me in my husbands arms, and if I should sleep a thousand years there is no world I could create where I would rather be.
